First Post (of Awesomeness)

August 1, 2009

I keep putting off writing this first post for a variety of reasons (none of them particularly good), so I’ve decided it’s about time to just go ahead and get it over with.

So. Welcome to Yosh! Nihongo! The About page tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this blog in general, so I suppose for this first post I’ll talk a bit about where I am with Japanese.

I’ve been studying Japanese for…an embarrassingly long amount of time, to only be at my current level. I took 3 years of formal classes, and since then it’s been on my own. Only in the past year have I gotten halfway serious about the self-studying, and my current “stats” are:

— 1195 kanji into Remembering the Kanji (Lesson 32), using the amazingly helpful website Reviewing the Kanji

— 782 seen cards in Anki. I’m currently doing recognition-only, and also cheating horribly by showing the readings on the front of the card. Once I finish RtK I’ll move the readings to the back.

I try to get through all my kanji reviews every day, and add as many as I feel up to (ranging from 0 to a full lesson). I do Anki reviews in blocks of 10 minutes, although I often do more than one block at a time. I do as many new cards as I can stand each day. I also try to listen to Japanese whenever I’m around my computer, although I have a really bad addiction to Western TV which makes it difficult sometimes.

My current goals are mainly abstract ones, including being able to read magazine interviews and play through video games without needing to look things up every 10 seconds. The only concrete goal I have at the moment is to pass JLPT Level 2 in December (I’ll argue about that in a later post), which means I pretty much have my work cut out for me for the next few months. 頑張ります!

Aaaaand that wraps up my first post! Thanks for reading it! ♥
